Acupuncture is now practiced throughout the world to provide safe and effective relief for a variety of illness ranging from arthritis, asthma and anxiety state through headaches, migraine and menstrual disorders, to sinus problems, skin rashes, stomach trouble and the vague state of exhaustion and poor health which often have no clear medical explanation.
"Acupuncture" means "Needle Piercing" which is the principal method of treatment or "Needle Moxa" which means a cone of dry herb is burned on the handle to generate a gentle heat.
The use of needles at specific points on the body surface to restore or maintain health is an ancient medical system, which originated in China and has been revived and developed to become one of the most sophisticated and advanced form of treatment for a wide range of disorders.
Acupuncture Basics
The practice of acupuncture is based on the philosophy of yin and yang - two opposite and yet complementary forces that govern all aspects of life, including health. Health problems result from an imbalance of these two complementary forces, which is usually caused by a disruption and blockage of energy, or chi, in the body.
Acupuncturists commonly use thin metal needles as a means of stimulating and balancing the points along specific energy pathways called meridians, to help chi or energy flow freely. Massage, tapping, heat, lasers and magnets can be used as an alternative to the needles.

Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture needles are so fine that there is no discomfort when they are inserted, but a slight tingle known as the needle sensation may be experienced .
They are withdrawn immediately or left up to twenty minutes, during which time there may be a heaviness of the limbs and pleasant feeling of relaxation.
Other methods of treating acupuncture points include massage and tapping techniques which are particularly suitable for children or people who have a genuine fear of needles.

Acupuncture is best for back pain - latest research from Germany
The latest research suggests that acupuncture can provide better relief for people suffering from back pain than physiotherapy, conventional drugs and exercise. According to a study in Germany 1,162 adults suffering from chronic back pain, 48% of those treated with acupuncture reported at least one-third less pain. Also long term improvement in mobility was reported.
the results compared to 27% of those reporting relief after drug and exercise therapy. A third group of patients underwent the so-called sham acupuncture, wehre needles were inserted randomly and less deeply around the painful area. Of these, 44% reported relief from the pain.
“Acupuncture gives physicians a promising and effective treatment option for those experiencing chronic low back pain, with few adverse effects or contraindications. The improvements in all primary and secondary outcome measures were significant and lasted long after completion of treatment.” said the team leder Michael Haake, of the University of Regensburg where the study took place.
They say that this is the largest and most rigorous trial to investigate the benefits of acupuncture, the technique in which sharp needles are introduced to a considerable depth into the body in precisely defined places in the body.
